Open Ranch Horse Division
A class that judges the Stockmanship of the rider as well as demonstrates the versatility of a finished ranch horse. Horses will be judged in 3 areas Reining/Dry Work, Stockmanship/Cow Work, & Roping. Horses may compete in only one event, two events, or all three. Individual placings for each event will be placed separately, and prizes will be given for top placings from the composite score of all 3 events combined. For the overall competition, the stockmanship will be worth the most points followed by the roping, and then the reining/dry work.
• Trot in the arena past the center of the arena.
• Trot a large full circle to the right and stop in the center of the arena.
• Rotate the front quarters of the horse for two full rotations, while keeping a stationary inside hind quarter. (2 spins right)
• Stand on a relaxed rein for 3 seconds
• Rotate the hind quarters half a rotation to the left, while keeping a stationary inside front quarter. (Move hind 180 degrees to face up).
• Trot a large full circle to the left and stop in the center of the arena
. • Rotate the front quarters of the horse for two full rotations, while keeping a stationary inside hind quarter. (2 spins left)
• Stand on a relaxed rein for 3 seconds.
• Rotate the hind quarters half a rotation to the right, while keeping a stationary inside front quarter. (Move hind 180 degrees to face up).
• Lope a large circle to the right.
• Change leads in the center of the arena.
• Lope a large circle to the left
. • Change leads in the center of the Arena. Continue loping.
• At the far end of the arena turn right to go down the middle of the arena.
• Just past the center of the arena Stop. • Back up no more then three steps, then lope straight ahead again.
• Stop at least 5 feet before the end of the arena.
• Stand on a relaxed rein for three seconds.
• Call for your cow.
• Smoothly box your cow to demonstrate control of the cow.
• Take the cow through short obstacle course.
• Settle the cow in the center of the arena.
• Rope the cow.
Ladies Division
Same course as the Open
Prospect Division
A class that demonstrates the young working ranch horse through a series of ranch trail obstacles as well as good ranch horsemanship under saddle. Besides trail obstacles, horses will be asked to walk, trot, lope one direction, back up, and stand.
• Riders will lead their horse into the arena
• Pick up one foot
• Mount horse
• Close gate while mounted
• Walk to center of arena and start facing the right fence. (You can choose to go either direction)
• Move from a walk into a good working trot
• Trot a small circle either direction, then move into a lope, and lope one large circle
• Complete a smooth transition from lope to trot
• Trot a small circle until you reach the center of arena
• At the center of the arena, turn and trot down the middle of the arena towards the in gate. Trot at least 20 feet in a straight line then stop and back up
• Stand still for 3 seconds on a relaxed rein to demonstrate completion of pattern
• Continue on through short ranch obstacle course including, carrying a slicker, stepping over poles, etc.
• Dismount and lead horse out of the arena
